Bend, OR – Bend Fire & Rescue in Oregon responded to a brush fire along Tumalo Road this afternoon after callers reported flames stretching hundreds of yards along the north side of the roadway between Valeview and 92nd.
According to officials, the first engine from the Tumalo station arrived to find nearby residents and passing motorists attempting to slow the fire’s spread using shovels and hoses.
Fire crews from Bend, along with assistance from a Redmond Fire unit, completed extinguishment efforts and prevented further spread. Officials said the fire was contained to under one-quarter mile and burned less than one acre in total.
Investigators believe the fire was likely started by hot debris from a passing westbound vehicle traveling toward the Old Bend Redmond Highway. Fire officials noted that mechanical issues such as failing brakes, catalytic converters, loose chains, or dragging metal can ignite dry roadside vegetation.
Authorities issued an early-season wildfire reminder, warning that roadside fuels are already dry enough to burn and that conditions will worsen as summer approaches.
Drivers were urged to inspect brakes and catalytic converters, secure towing equipment and chains, and ensure nothing is dragging or capable of producing sparks.
Officials credited quick reporting, rapid response, and community action for preventing greater damage, and thanked Redmond Fire for providing additional resources.
