Portland Police Investigate Suspicious Incidents Near Ida B. Wells High Schoo

Portland, OR – Portland police are investigating two separate incidents involving a black Hyundai Sonata, after reports surfaced of the vehicle acting suspiciously near Ida B. Wells High School in the Hillsdale neighborhood. The incidents, both involving male suspects in the vehicle, have prompted increased safety measures around the school.

The first incident occurred on November 20, around 6:30 p.m., when a student walking home from practice reported that a black Hyundai Sonata with at least two men inside was following her. According to the student’s account, the car repeatedly slowed down and sped up to match her pace. Fearing for her safety, the student hid behind a dumpster as one of the men exited the vehicle and stared at her. She managed to run home safely.

A second incident took place earlier, on November 14, around 12:30 p.m., when another student near the school was approached by the same vehicle. The student reported that one of the men inside the car attempted to speak with her. In response, she hid in nearby bushes, and the vehicle eventually turned around and drove away.

In light of these reports, Ayesha Coning, the principal of Ida B. Wells High School, reassured families in a statement released on Tuesday. She acknowledged the concern surrounding the incidents, emphasizing that student safety remains the school’s top priority.

“I understand that such reports can cause anxiety and concern,” Coning stated. “The safety of Ida B. Wells students is and always will be my top priority.”

Coning also issued safety tips to students, encouraging them to travel with others, stay aware of their surroundings, and trust their instincts if a situation feels unsafe. She urged students to use the SafeOregon tip line to report any safety concerns. SafeOregon is a confidential service where students, parents, and staff can anonymously report potential threats or suspicious activity.

Portland police have responded by increasing patrols in the area around the school. In addition, they are urging parents to discuss safety plans with their children and remind them never to approach a vehicle driven by someone they do not know.

The police department continues to investigate both incidents, and they have asked anyone with information to come forward. The community remains on alert as authorities work to ensure the safety of students in the area.
