BEND, Ore. — The City of Bend is reminding residents that materials left on streets can enter the city’s storm-drain system and potentially reach local surface water or groundwater.

Bend has more than 10,000 storm-drain catch basins that move rain runoff to surface water or groundwater, according to the city. Because the system connects directly to the environment, substances left on streets can become stormwater pollution.

City officials identified motor oil, paint, household cleaners, grease, fertilizers, construction waste and sewage as examples of pollutants that should be kept out of storm drains.

Residents who encounter a spill are encouraged to clean it up quickly when it is safe to do so and report the spill to the city at 541-317-3000, ext. 2.

The city said early action can help protect rivers and groundwater and is encouraging residents to learn how to recognize and properly respond to potential spills.
