Over 300 Volunteers Gather for 32nd Annual Spring Thing at Smith Rock State Park

TERREBONNE, Ore. – More than 300 volunteers united at Smith Rock State Park on Saturday to take part in the 32nd Annual Spring Thing, marking the largest climber-led conservation event in the United States. The event, organized by the Smith Rock Group, brought together individuals from all walks of life for a day of environmental stewardship and community involvement.

The event featured 25 different stewardship projects, including essential trail repairs, habitat restoration, and a significant overhaul of the iconic Misery Ridge Trail. This popular trail, known for its breathtaking views and challenging terrain, was temporarily closed for part of the day to accommodate the restoration work.

Dustin Ebel, president of the Smith Rock Group, shared his enthusiasm for the turnout. “We have over 75 volunteers working to restore the trail, put in new steps, and do a lot to ensure it remains in great shape for generations to come,” Ebel said. “It’s amazing to see so many people come together to protect and enhance the park.”

The volunteers spent the day clearing debris, building new steps, and reinforcing trail paths, making sure that Smith Rock’s natural beauty would continue to be accessible for hikers, climbers, and outdoor enthusiasts. As the workday drew to a close, participants were treated to a celebration featuring food, local vendor booths, yoga sessions, and a raffle, offering a fun and relaxing way to cap off the event.

The Spring Thing not only focused on preserving the park’s physical trails and landscapes, but also emphasized the importance of a collective commitment to conservation. The event highlighted the crucial role that outdoor enthusiasts and local communities play in protecting the natural spaces that they cherish.

As the day wrapped up, it was clear that the 32nd Annual Spring Thing had once again brought people together, fostering a shared sense of responsibility for the stewardship of one of Oregon’s most beloved landmarks.
