Oregon Attorney General Issues Warning to Businesses on AI Use

Bend, OR – Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum has issued a stern warning to businesses in the state about the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential legal implications. As AI technology continues to gain traction across various industries, Rosenblum stressed the importance of ensuring that its application complies with existing state laws, particularly those designed to protect consumers.

Rosenblum’s guidance, which was released recently, focuses on the need for businesses to follow the Oregon Unlawful Trade Practices Act (UTPA). The act is intended to prevent businesses from engaging in deceptive or misleading practices during consumer transactions. The Attorney General’s office is concerned that as AI systems, like chatbots, become more prevalent in customer interactions, they could inadvertently lead to harm if not properly managed.

One significant point raised by Rosenblum was the potential for businesses to be held accountable if their AI-driven technologies provide consumers with inaccurate or harmful information. For instance, if a company uses AI to power a chatbot that offers incorrect advice or misrepresents facts, the business could be in violation of the UTPA. This could result in penalties or other legal consequences.

“Businesses must take responsibility for the technologies they deploy, especially when it comes to consumer interactions,” Rosenblum said. “Artificial intelligence should be used thoughtfully and with consideration for the impact it may have on consumers.”

The Attorney General’s office emphasized that while AI has the potential to greatly enhance business operations, it must be used with caution and in a manner that does not mislead or deceive the public. As businesses across Oregon explore new AI applications, Rosenblum’s warning serves as a reminder that technological advancement should go hand-in-hand with legal and ethical responsibility.

This guidance is part of ongoing efforts by Rosenblum and her office to ensure that emerging technologies do not undermine consumer protections. As AI continues to evolve, businesses are encouraged to stay informed about state laws and the potential risks associated with the misuse of artificial intelligence.
