Flooding Threatens Burns, Oregon as Silvies River Levels Rise Again

BURNS, OR – After historic flooding devastated parts of Burns and the surrounding area ten days ago, residents are once again facing renewed threats as the Silvies River is expected to reach flood stage once more. As floodwaters receded over the weekend, some neighborhoods became accessible again, but the danger is far from over.

The Harney County Sheriff’s Office issued a Monday afternoon update, alerting residents of the continued risks posed by rising river levels. With additional snowmelt forecasted, the Silvies River is predicted to hit flood stage on Tuesday, putting vulnerable areas back in jeopardy.

Though parts of Burns, such as the N Broadway Avenue area, have seen water levels drop, certain neighborhoods, particularly those located near the Silvies River, continue to experience standing water. Residents in these areas have been cautioned to stay alert, as floodwaters could quickly rise again. Evacuation orders, which had been lifted in some areas, may be reinstated or expanded at any time, authorities warned.

Efforts to reinforce the Dike D levee, a critical line of defense against the river’s rising waters, are expected to be completed today. Local contractors are working in coordination with the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure the levee’s integrity. Gravel operations are ongoing as part of this reinforcement effort.

In response to the renewed flood threat, the City of Burns and the City of Hines have resumed sandbag operations to ensure that bags are available for residents in need. Sandbags can be collected at the City of Hines Public Works facility.

Despite the flooding’s impact on local infrastructure, the City of Burns’ drinking water remains unaffected, with public works crews continuing to address issues within the city’s sewer system, which has been compromised by the floodwaters.

Public health officials continue to emphasize the dangers of exposure to floodwaters, which can carry serious health risks. Residents are advised to exercise caution when navigating flooded or previously flooded areas. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and officials urge the community to remain prepared for further developments.

As the Silvies River’s levels rise once more, Burns residents face another challenging chapter in their recovery from this unprecedented flooding event.
