Wind-Driven Euston Fire Near Redmond Prompts Evacuations and Power Outages

Redmond, Ore. — A single match sparked the rapidly spreading Euston Fire north of Redmond on Tuesday, prompting an urgent response from firefighting crews and putting hundreds of residents on evacuation notice. The blaze also caused power outages affecting more than 10,000 people.

Tom Mooney, Fire Marshal for Redmond Fire & Rescue, said strong winds blowing from the north, with sustained speeds of 14 mph and gusts up to 24 mph, accelerated the fire’s movement southward and eastward.

“The wind pushed the fire to the south and then to the east,” Mooney explained. “Fortunately, the winds did not shift from the west, which would have pushed the fire toward a nearby neighborhood off 19th. The outcome could have been much worse.”

Firefighters successfully contained the fire with assistance from aerial resources, including two helicopters and a fire retardant bomber. An irrigated agricultural field on the eastern boundary also helped serve as a natural firebreak.

The fire marshal confirmed that the homeowner responsible for starting the fire received a citation for violating Redmond’s outdoor burn ban, which has been in effect since May 30. The citation carries a $335 fine and the potential for additional financial liability through cost recovery, which would require the homeowner to cover some or all of the firefighting expenses.

Mooney did not provide an estimate for the total cost of extinguishing the fire, noting that the blaze is not yet fully contained. However, the involvement of multiple firefighting agencies and aerial support indicates significant resource deployment.

Crews have spent the night “mopping up” the fire—working from the outside inward to extinguish hot spots and prevent re-ignition. Firefighters will continue this careful work into the coming nights, as glowing embers are often easier to detect after dark.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to local burn bans to prevent similar incidents in the future.
