Prescribed Burn Planned Near La Pine to Reduce Wildfire Risk

La Pine, Ore. — Firefighters with the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District are planning a prescribed burn today approximately five miles northeast of La Pine. Up to 173 acres of forestland near Ogden Group Camp and McKay Crossing Campground are slated for treatment, with ignitions scheduled to begin around 10 a.m.

The operation is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires in Central Oregon by removing built-up vegetation and restoring forest health. Smoke from the burn is expected to be visible from La Pine, Sunriver, Highway 97, and surrounding areas.

Fire officials say no trail or road closures are anticipated, but smoke impacts are likely — especially overnight and in the early morning hours. Residents of La Pine and nearby Newberry Estates are advised to close doors and windows during these periods to minimize indoor smoke exposure.

Drivers traveling through smoky areas, particularly along Highway 97, are urged to slow down, turn on headlights, and set vehicle air systems to recirculate to avoid bringing in smoke from outside.

“Prescribed burns are essential to maintaining the health of our fire-dependent ecosystems and reducing the threat of uncontrolled wildfires to our communities,” said a spokesperson from the U.S. Forest Service. “We work closely with the Oregon Department of Forestry’s smoke specialists to carry out burns when conditions will help move smoke up and away from populated areas.”

Officials recommend that residents use portable air cleaners or DIY air purifiers, and those with central air systems should run them with high-efficiency filters, especially at night. Individuals with heart or lung conditions, including asthma, are encouraged to monitor their symptoms and consult with their healthcare provider if symptoms worsen.
