Pedestrian Killed in Collision with Semi on I-84 in Hood River County

Bend, OR – A deadly crash on Interstate 84 in Hood River County resulted in the death of a pedestrian on Monday evening, causing significant traffic delays. The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. near milepost 64, approximately six miles east of Hood River.

The victim, identified as 38-year-old Michael Joseph Sampson of Hood River, was reportedly running eastbound on the westbound on-ramp to I-84 when he entered the highway and was struck by a semi-truck traveling west. According to the Oregon State Police (OSP), Sampson was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver, who was not injured, remained at the scene and has cooperated with investigators.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined why Sampson was on the interstate. Oregon State Police are working to piece together the events that led to the tragic accident.

The crash led to significant traffic disruptions, with westbound lanes of I-84 closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene. Motorists experienced long delays as crews worked to clear the wreckage and reopen the highway.

The investigation is ongoing, and OSP is urging anyone with information to contact them. Authorities are also asking drivers to be mindful of pedestrian safety, especially in areas where vehicles and pedestrians are in close proximity.
