Windstorm in Coos County Causes Injuries to Officers and Driver

Bend, OR – A powerful windstorm that swept through Coos County on Christmas night led to a dangerous incident in the Bandon area, leaving multiple people injured.

The event occurred as two Coos County Sheriff’s deputies and a Bandon Police officer were conducting a routine DUII investigation on Batson Lane. As the investigation unfolded, strong winds rapidly intensified, causing several trees to fall. The trees struck the officers, the driver of the involved vehicle, and their patrol vehicles, leading to significant damage.

According to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the vehicle was knocked unconscious by a fallen tree, while both Deputy Burgo and Officer Carpenter sustained injuries from the falling trees. Despite the chaos, Deputy Burgo and Sgt. Boswell immediately moved the unconscious driver to safety and began administering first aid.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) quickly arrived on the scene to provide further medical treatment. All those involved, including the officers and the driver, were treated on-site and transported to Bay Area Hospital. Fortunately, despite the severity of the incident, all individuals are expected to recover, with authorities confirming that everyone involved sustained injuries but are overall okay.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers posed by severe weather conditions, especially when they coincide with law enforcement operations. Authorities have not released further details regarding the specific nature of the injuries sustained by the individuals involved.
