Man arrested after woman reports attempted sexual assault in Oregon underpass

A 40-year-old man was arrested in Bend, Oregon, after allegedly attacking a woman and attempting to sexually assault her as she walked through a railroad underpass, according to the Bend Police Department.

The incident occurred on September 29, 2026, at approximately 9:31 a.m. near Third Street.

Police identified the suspect as Sheldon Shawn Doveri, a Bend resident who was reportedly acquainted with the 39-year-old woman.

According to investigators, the woman was walking through the underpass when she encountered Doveri. The two briefly spoke before the man allegedly exposed himself, engaged in an indecent act and physically attacked her.

Authorities said the suspect tackled the woman and attempted to sexually assault her. She resisted and struggled to escape.

During the confrontation, another person entered the underpass, apparently interrupting the alleged attack. The suspect subsequently fled the area.

The woman managed to reach a nearby business, where she sought assistance and contacted emergency services.

Responding officers obtained a description of the suspect and began searching the surrounding area.

Doveri was located shortly afterward near the intersection of Northeast Fourth Street and Hawthorne Avenue. He was taken into custody and transported to the Bend Police Department before being lodged at the Deschutes County Jail.

Police said he was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, harassment and public indecency.

Investigators also appealed for assistance from the unidentified bystander whose arrival reportedly interrupted the attack.

The Bend Police Department asked the individual and anyone who witnessed the incident to contact non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911.

The allegations remain subject to the legal process, and an arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.
