Crews complete repairs at Twickenham boat ramp as wildfire recovery work continues

PRINEVILLE, Ore. — Crews have completed repair work at the Twickenham boat ramp, reopening the area for river access as restoration efforts continue across areas affected by recent wildfires in Central Oregon.

Work at the boat ramp was completed Friday and was designed in part to reduce the potential for sediment to enter the John Day River. Officials said the repair work is intended to protect river access as well as spawning areas and fish populations.

Assessment work across the affected fire areas is also nearing completion. Operations officials are using those assessments to determine which personnel and equipment are best suited for individual repair projects based on terrain and the extent of damage.

Equipment assigned to the recovery effort includes road graders, excavators, chippers, bulldozers, engines, water tenders, skidders and feller bunchers. Fallers and hand crews are also working throughout the affected areas.

Officials said firefighter and public safety remain priorities as work continues. Safety officers are assessing potential hazards each day and coordinating measures to reduce risks.

Because of the size and terrain of the fire area, additional fireline medical personnel have been assigned, including Rapid Extraction Module Support teams capable of responding to medical emergencies in rugged locations.

The fire area remains open to public travel. Officials are urging hunters and other recreational visitors to use caution and watch for unstable trees, loose rocks, fallen logs and debris on roadways.

Crook County is also planning a Wildfire Recovery Multi-Agency Resource Center event for residents affected by recent fires. The county is working with the Oregon Department of Forestry and other local, state and federal agencies and community organizations to provide information, resources and assistance.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Crook County High School Gymnasium.

Fire restrictions remain in effect across the fire area.
