Man Arrested Near Bend Elementary School Following 911 Call About Armed Suspect

BEND, Ore. — A 21-year-old man was taken into custody Monday morning in the parking lot of Silver Rail Elementary School following a report of an armed individual violating a restraining order at a nearby residence, according to the Bend Police Department.

Officers responded to the 61500 block of Whitetail Street at approximately 11:45 a.m. after a 911 caller screamed into the phone before abruptly hanging up, Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said. Additional calls to emergency dispatch indicated a man at the location may have been armed and was allegedly violating the terms of a restraining order.

Upon arrival, officers located the suspect outside the home. When confronted, the man fled on foot through the neighborhood, eventually making his way toward Silver Rail Elementary School. Officers pursued the suspect and confronted him in the school’s parking lot, where he was restrained using a wrap device and taken into custody without further incident.

Miller said there was no information to suggest the suspect was armed at the time of his arrest, despite earlier reports.

The man was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for evaluation. He is expected to be booked into the Deschutes County Jail on charges of harassment, violating a restraining order, and resisting arrest.

There were no injuries reported during the incident, and officials confirmed that students and staff at Silver Rail Elementary were not in immediate danger.
