Bend, OR – Fire crews in Bend, Oregon responded this afternoon to a structure fire on NW Florida Avenue where smoke and flames were reported at the rear of a home.
According to officials, the residence is one of Bend’s original mill houses, built in 1925.
Firefighters arrived on scene and quickly knocked down the flames, though significant overhaul work was required after the fire spread into the attic of the older structure.
Authorities said the home is no longer habitable. The Red Cross is assisting two adults and two dogs displaced by the fire.
Investigators determined the fire originated on the exterior of the home before spreading up the wood siding into the eaves and attic.
The cause was linked to improper disposal of oily rags from a recent project.
Fire officials issued a safety reminder for residents conducting staining or painting work, warning that oily rags can ignite if not handled properly.
They advised never leaving them in piles or containers, allowing them to dry flat outdoors away from structures, and disposing of them at approved hazardous waste facilities once fully dry.
