Bend, OR — The Upper Deschutes River Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is now open for public review and feedback through February 5. Local residents, landowners, and other stakeholders are encouraged to examine the draft plan and submit their thoughts and suggestions by visiting www.deschutes.org/forester.
The CWPP is designed to help communities within Deschutes County identify location-specific strategies to increase wildfire resilience. Key components of the plan include pinpointing areas at risk of hazardous fuel buildup and prioritizing them for treatments, as well as strengthening community preparedness to respond to wildfire threats.
Deschutes County Forester Kevin Moriarty emphasized the collaborative nature of the CWPP, noting that communities across Central Oregon are working closely with forest and fire management agencies to assess local wildfire risks. These partnerships aim to develop effective, place-based solutions to reduce fire hazards and protect residents, infrastructure, and natural resources.
“Community Wildfire Protection Plans are a vital planning tool for communities to complete this important work,” Moriarty said, underscoring the role these plans play in helping localities prepare for and mitigate wildfire risks.
The CWPP is part of an ongoing effort in Central Oregon to create more resilient communities that are better equipped to handle the increasing threat of wildfires. With public input now being sought, the plan will continue to evolve, ensuring it meets the needs of the community and addresses the unique challenges of the Upper Deschutes River area.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the public comment period and contribute to the shaping of the final plan. All feedback will be reviewed and considered as officials work to refine the strategies outlined in the document.
