Portland Police Investigate In-Custody Death Following Stabbing Incident

Portland, OR — The Portland Police Bureau is investigating the in-custody death of a man who was detained on Wednesday night following a stabbing incident in the city’s Humboldt neighborhood.

According to authorities, officers were called to a convenience store located in the 1500 block of North Going Street at 10:05 p.m. on December 12 after receiving reports of a stabbing. Upon arriving at the scene, police found an adult male victim suffering from injuries that were believed to be non-life-threatening. The victim was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police later located the suspect, another adult male, in the vicinity at North Interstate Avenue and North Humboldt Street. Authorities stated that the suspect was detained by officers without incident, and no force was used during the arrest.

However, shortly after being taken into custody, the suspect lost consciousness while officers waited for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to arrive. Officers performed CPR until EMS personnel reached the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Unit has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, as police are working to notify his family. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office.

In the meantime, investigators are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Shaye Samora at (503) 823-0768 or Detective Michael Schmerber at (503) 823-0991. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have asked the public to assist with any relevant details.

As a result of the investigation, North Interstate Avenue has been closed in both directions between North Going Street and North Alberta Street. MAX trains are still passing through the area but are not making stops within the closure zone.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
