Portland Man Found Guilty in 2023 Downtown Shooting Case

Portland, OR — A Multnomah County jury has found 29-year-old Dwayne Driver guilty on multiple charges stemming from a shooting in downtown Portland that left a man seriously injured in March 2023.

Driver was convicted on charges including attempted murder in the second degree with a firearm, first-degree assault with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.

The incident occurred on March 18, 2023, when Portland police responded to reports of a shooting at a Chevron station located on West Burnside and Southwest 4th Avenue. Officers found a man unconscious in the parking lot behind nearby Dante’s nightclub. The victim, who had been shot in the stomach, thigh, and left arm, was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery. He spent several weeks recovering from his injuries.

Surveillance footage from the gas station showed a silver Audi SUV pulling into the parking lot near a parked party bus. The footage captured Driver, identified by police as the shooter, exiting the passenger side of the Audi and approaching the party bus. Driver was seen entering the bus, where he fired multiple shots before fleeing back to the vehicle. Police recovered six shell casings from the scene.

Detectives investigating the shooting later identified the silver Audi SUV as belonging to Driver. They obtained a search warrant for his home, where they found clothing matching what the shooter was seen wearing in the surveillance video. Driver was arrested on April 13, 2023.

A trial was held in December 2023, where a 12-person jury deliberated over the evidence presented by the prosecution. On December 11, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on the charge of felon in possession of a firearm. The following day, they returned guilty verdicts on the remaining charges, including attempted murder and assault.

Driver faces significant prison time for the convictions, and sentencing is scheduled for a later date.

This case underscores the continuing challenges of gun violence in Portland, as authorities continue to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in violent crimes across the city.
