Oregon State Fire Marshal Expands Incentive Program to Support Defensible Space Projects

Bend, OR – In an effort to enhance wildfire preparedness across the state, the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has announced an expansion of its incentive program, offering financial support to Oregonians working to create defensible space around their homes. The initiative aims to help homeowners in wildfire-vulnerable areas by offsetting the costs associated with essential wildfire mitigation efforts.

Starting in 2024, eligible property owners in select communities can receive a $250 payment after completing a free defensible space assessment. These assessments, which can be scheduled easily online, are conducted by the OSFM or participating local fire agencies. The program encourages residents to act now, ensuring they are better protected in the event of a wildfire.

“The record-breaking wildfire season of 2023 underscores the critical need to prepare for future wildfire threats,” said State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple. “Now is the time to take action. By scheduling an assessment, homeowners can make a significant difference in protecting their homes and neighborhoods.”

Defensible space is the area surrounding a building that is managed to prevent the spread of fire. Creating this buffer zone involves removing or modifying vegetation and other materials that could fuel a wildfire, thereby reducing the risk of property damage. According to experts, defensible space is one of the most effective strategies for safeguarding homes during wildfire events.

The incentive program addresses a significant barrier for many homeowners: the cost of implementing defensible space recommendations. The OSFM recognizes that financial constraints can make it difficult for some to complete these projects, and the $250 payment aims to ease that burden.

The expanded program is part of the OSFM’s broader efforts to help Oregon communities become more fire-adapted. With the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires, proactive measures like defensible space are crucial for protecting lives, properties, and the environment. By encouraging homeowners to take responsibility for their property’s safety, the OSFM hopes to reduce the devastating impacts of future wildfires.

The incentive program is available to a limited number of homeowners, and supplies are expected to last until funding runs out. Those interested in participating are urged to schedule an assessment as soon as possible to take advantage of the program.
