Oregon National Guard Responds to Active Threat Incident at Camp Withycombe

Bend, OR – The Oregon National Guard (ONG) confirmed that it is responding to an active threat incident that occurred on Wednesday at the Clackamas Armed Forces Readiness Center (AFRC) located on Camp Withycombe. The incident, which unfolded on December 11, prompted a swift and coordinated response from local law enforcement, ensuring the safety of all personnel on the base.

According to a statement released by the Oregon National Guard, all members of the Oregon National Guard, the State of Oregon employees, and U.S. Army Reserve personnel working at the AFRC were accounted for following the threat. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded to the situation, resolving the matter without any harm to personnel or the surrounding community.

Brig. Gen. Alan R. Gronewold, Oregon’s Adjutant General, emphasized the importance of unity and resilience in such tense situations. “While these types of situations are unsettling, they also remind us of the strength of our community and the importance of staying connected to those we serve alongside,” Gronewold stated. “We will continue to work together to ensure our organization remains a safe, resilient, and professional environment.”

Following the incident, Gronewold and other key leaders from the Oregon National Guard, as well as representatives from medical command, behavioral health, religious support, and the Resiliency Directorate, met with affected personnel to provide support and ensure their well-being. These efforts are part of the Guard’s broader commitment to the safety and mental health of its members.

The Clackamas Armed Forces Readiness Center, which is located within Camp Withycombe, houses several Oregon Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve units. The site also serves as a supply depot and is home to a training and equipment repair facility, in addition to housing the Oregon Military Museum. The installation is a key military resource for the region.

Gronewold thanked the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies for their “swift and professional response,” which played a crucial role in resolving the incident without further escalation. He reiterated that the safety and well-being of all soldiers, airmen, civilian staff, and the surrounding community remain the Oregon National Guard’s top priority.

At this time, the Oregon National Guard has not disclosed further details about the nature of the threat, but the situation is understood to have been contained without incident. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.

As the incident concludes, the Oregon National Guard remains focused on maintaining a secure and supportive environment for its personnel, reaffirming its commitment to readiness and resilience in the face of unexpected challenges.
