Oregon Declares February as Tsunami and Earthquake Awareness Month

Bend, OR – Governor Tina Kotek has officially declared February as Tsunami and Earthquake Awareness Month in Oregon, aiming to raise awareness about the natural disasters that pose a significant risk to the state. The declaration highlights the ongoing threat posed by the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a major fault line off the Oregon coast that has the potential to trigger both devastating earthquakes and tsunamis.

Scientific data indicates that Oregon is particularly vulnerable to these hazards due to its location along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The region’s proximity to this fault makes it prone to seismic activity, which could result in catastrophic damage. A stark reminder of this risk came in December 2024, when a widespread tsunami warning was issued for the southern Oregon coast. Fortunately, the event did not lead to any major incidents, but it underscored the need for preparedness in coastal communities.

In light of these concerns, the Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) is stepping up its efforts to engage with local communities. On February 27 and 28, the department will visit several coastal cities to provide critical safety information and preparedness tips. The meetings will be an opportunity for residents to learn how to respond in the event of an earthquake or tsunami and ensure they are adequately prepared for such disasters.

Governor Kotek emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness in her statement, saying, “We must continue to educate and inform our communities so they are ready when the unexpected occurs. Preparedness saves lives, and awareness is the first step in saving those lives.”

The OEM’s efforts to inform and educate the public come at a crucial time, as scientific experts predict that Oregon will eventually experience a significant seismic event. By using February to focus on earthquake and tsunami awareness, the state hopes to foster greater resilience and ensure that its coastal residents are ready to respond effectively when the next emergency strikes.

As part of the awareness campaign, the state is also encouraging individuals and families to create emergency plans, stock up on supplies, and familiarize themselves with evacuation routes. The message is clear: preparation is key to survival in the event of a natural disaster.
