BEND, Ore. — A woman was arrested on charges of arson and animal abuse early Sunday morning after police say she intentionally set fire to her kitchen, resulting in the deaths of two cats.
The incident occurred around 1:35 a.m. in the 19900 block of Waterfall Lane, located in the southwest part of Bend. Responding officers arrived to find two individuals and a dog outside the home, but no one appeared to be seriously injured.
According to Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller, investigators quickly determined that one of the occupants, 65-year-old Wendi Thornton, had deliberately started the fire in the kitchen. The other resident of the home reportedly called 911 for help after the blaze broke out.
Thornton was transported to St. Charles Bend for a medical evaluation before being booked into the Deschutes County Jail. She faces charges of first-degree arson and two counts of first-degree animal abuse. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding Thornton’s motive or state of mind at the time of the incident.
The fire caused extensive damage to the interior of the home, with preliminary estimates placing the cost of the damage at approximately $40,000. The fire was contained to the interior of the house, though the loss of life of the two cats has added to the gravity of the situation.
Local authorities are continuing their investigation, and Thornton will face legal proceedings in connection with the charges. The case underscores the importance of both fire safety and animal welfare, as well as the potential for serious legal consequences in cases involving intentional harm.
No further information about the conditions of the other residents or the dog was immediately available.
