Sunriver Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 97 Near La Pine

LA PINE, Ore. – A Sunriver man was killed Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 97 just north of La Pine, according to the Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. near Drafter Road, where a 2003 Ford Taurus and a Chevrolet Silverado had collided.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the Taurus, identified as 76-year-old Marvin Lee Cudd Jr., had been stopped on the northbound shoulder of the highway. Authorities said the vehicle was facing west and positioned perpendicular to the roadway. As the Taurus attempted to cross the highway, it was struck on the driver’s side by the northbound Silverado.

Cudd was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Silverado, a man from Christmas Valley, sustained minor injuries and remained at the scene during the investigation.

The crash caused significant traffic disruption, with Highway 97 either closed or partially blocked for approximately three hours.

Oregon State Police, along with local emergency responders, are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

No further details have been released at this time.
