Small Explosion at Bend Poker Room Due to Gas Leak

BEND, Ore. – A gas leak in a pizza oven led to a small explosion at the Bend Poker Room near Pilot Butte Thursday evening, prompting a swift response from local fire units.

The incident occurred just before 5:00 p.m. at the establishment located on NE Greenwood Avenue. According to initial reports from the dispatch website PulsePoint, the situation was flagged as an explosion. However, Bend Deputy Fire Marshal Cindy Kettering clarified that the explosion was the result of gas buildup in the oven after its burners failed to ignite properly. The gas ignited in what Kettering described as a small flash fire, which quickly self-extinguished.

Fortunately, the fire did not cause significant damage to the kitchen or surrounding areas. However, one individual was transported to St. Charles Medical Center for treatment. The condition of the person has not been disclosed at this time.

Despite the scare, the Poker Room was able to continue operating, although without the use of the pizza oven. Emergency responders, including Bend Police, assisted with traffic control at the scene as fire crews worked to ensure the area was safe.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with gas appliances and the importance of timely maintenance to prevent such accidents.

This remains an ongoing investigation as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the incident.
