BEND, Ore. — Authorities in Bend are investigating a homicide following the discovery of a middle-aged man’s body in a northeast neighborhood Wednesday evening. A 27-year-old Bend resident is in custody in connection with the case.
Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said officers responded around 7:16 p.m. to reports of a deceased individual in the 100 block of NE Emerson Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an unidentified middle-aged white man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
As detectives began their investigation, police received a call about a trespassing incident in the 600 block of NE Irving Avenue, near the Juniper Swim and Fitness Center. The caller reported a man wearing a backpack acting erratically and running through a residential yard.
Officers responded to the area and took the man into custody on suspicion of second-degree trespassing. Further investigation linked the individual to the homicide on Emerson Avenue, Miller said.
The suspect was subsequently booked into the Deschutes County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon. As of Thursday morning, formal charges had not yet been filed.
The identity of the victim has not been released, and efforts to confirm it are ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted Thursday to determine the cause and manner of death.
Police have not released additional details about the nature of the crime or any possible motive. The investigation remains active.
