Massive Pileup on I-84 Involving Over 100 Vehicles Near Multnomah Falls

PORTLAND, Ore. — A significant crash involving more than 100 vehicles, including cars, trucks, and semi-trucks, occurred Thursday morning on Interstate 84 westbound near Multnomah Falls. The incident, which took place around 10:45 a.m., led to a chain of collisions caused by hazardous weather conditions, including icy roads, limited visibility, and near-white-out conditions.

According to the Oregon State Police (OSP), their officers responded to eight separate crashes, while local law enforcement and first responders assisted at the scene. Despite the severity of the crash, which included an SUV catching on fire, authorities confirmed that no serious injuries were reported. Four individuals were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The pileup, which spanned a stretch of I-84 westbound near milepost 35, saw many vehicles trapped in the hazardous conditions. As emergency teams worked tirelessly to assist drivers, passengers in vehicles were advised to remain inside their cars for safety while first responders checked on their well-being.

“Numerous factors, such as icy and slick roads, limited visibility, and near-white-out conditions, contributed to the crashes,” Oregon State Police stated in a release. “The total number of vehicles involved is not yet known at this time, but the situation continues to be assessed.”

The westbound lanes of I-84 remain closed at Multnomah Falls, and though responders are working to clear the wreckage, the area remains under a winter storm warning. Local authorities urged residents to avoid travel if possible, as weather conditions are expected to persist until 10 a.m. Friday. As of late Thursday afternoon, traffic was beginning to flow again, though full access to the highway is still limited. The quick response by local authorities and emergency services has helped mitigate further harm, but motorists are still being urged to stay informed and prepared for ongoing winter weather conditions in the area.
