Firefighters Warn of the Dangers of Christmas Tree Fires

Bend, OR – As the holiday season kicks off, fire officials are urging the public to take extra precautions to prevent Christmas tree fires, which can cause millions of dollars in property damage and pose a deadly threat. On Monday, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue held a demonstration to highlight the risks associated with holiday trees and the importance of fire safety.

Each year, Christmas tree fires result in significant property losses and, in some cases, fatalities. Firefighters emphasize that a dry tree, if exposed to heat or faulty electrical wiring, can catch fire in mere seconds. Nationally, an average of 160 Christmas tree fires occur annually, a statistic that fire experts say can be significantly reduced with proper care.

To mitigate the risks, officials recommend several key safety tips:

  1. Water the tree regularly: A well-watered tree is far less likely to catch fire than a dry one. Firefighters advise homeowners to check the tree’s water level daily and replenish as needed.
  2. Inspect Christmas lights and wiring: Before putting up any decorations, ensure all lights and wires are in good condition. Frayed wires and malfunctioning lights can spark a fire if not carefully checked.
  3. Maintain a safe distance from heat sources: Trees should be placed at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, space heaters, and candles.

Fire officials also remind residents to turn off all lights when leaving the house or going to bed to further reduce the risk of a fire starting unnoticed.

In recent years, Christmas tree fires have caused substantial damage, and the consequences can be devastating. Firefighters are stressing that taking a few extra minutes to check a tree’s water level and wiring can make a significant difference in preventing a disaster.

As families gather to celebrate the season, fire safety experts urge everyone to stay vigilant and follow these simple safety measures to ensure that the holidays remain joyful and safe.
