Fire Engulfs Madras Home, Displacing Resident; Cause Under Investigation

Bend, OR – A fire severely damaged a home in Madras on Wednesday, displacing a resident, according to Jefferson County Fire and EMS.

Firefighters were dispatched around 11:45 a.m. to reports of a structure fire in the Fairgrounds Road area. Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrived first on the scene and confirmed that all occupants had safely exited the building.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered a single-family home with an attached structure on the north side fully engulfed in flames. The fire had spread underneath the structure and was actively moving into the building. Firefighters quickly initiated offensive operations, successfully bringing the fire under control within 30 minutes.

During the response, Warm Springs Fire and Safety provided mutual aid for medical coverage, while a personnel callback was issued to ensure proper staffing for the district. The fire caused significant damage to the structure, rendering it uninhabitable due to the loss of both water and power. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced resident with temporary housing.

Crews initially faced difficulty in gaining access beneath the home to extinguish the fire that had spread under the structure. After the fire was brought under control, firefighters remained on scene for an additional hour to conduct overhaul operations and ensure all hot spots were fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Jefferson County Fire and EMS expressed gratitude to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Warm Springs Fire and Safety, Pacific Power, and Deschutes Valley Water for their assistance during the incident.
