Fire Destroys Shop Building Near Bend, Authorities Investigating Cause

BEND, Ore. — A fire destroyed a shop building and caused significant damage to nearby structures early Monday morning along U.S. Highway 20, about two miles east of Bend. The blaze, which broke out at approximately 9:20 a.m., is currently under investigation.

Bend Fire & Rescue responded to the scene in the 23000 block of Highway 20 East after reports indicated a structure fire with possible extension to nearby outbuildings. Upon arrival, crews found the 1,000-square-foot shop building fully engulfed in flames, with attached lean-tos also caught in the fire.

Firefighters faced challenges due to the area’s limited water supply. To combat the blaze, crews requested mutual aid, including two water tenders from Alfalfa Fire, and traffic control support from the Oregon Department of Transportation. The fire’s operations were complicated by the need to use water tenders and portable tanks in lieu of a stable water supply.

“Fire operations were prolonged due to a lack of water supply in the area,” said Deputy Fire Marshal Cindy Kettering in a statement. “The necessity to utilize water tenders and portable tanks made the response more challenging.”

The structure, which sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage, was unoccupied at the time of the fire, preventing any injuries. The contents of the building, including tools and equipment, were valued at an additional $25,000 in losses. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to nearby trailers or structures, as fire crews implemented a defensive strategy to quickly contain the blaze.

“Mop-up operations continued well into the afternoon,” Kettering added, urging drivers to exercise caution in the area due to ongoing activity.

The homeowner, who was not displaced by the fire, did not require assistance from the American Red Cross. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, though no further details have been released.

As the investigation continues, officials are reminding the public to remain vigilant and take care when traveling in the area.
