BEND, Ore. — Deschutes County leaders announced the recipients of this year’s Health Heroes Awards on Tuesday, recognizing individuals and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding commitment to improving community health.
The individual award was presented to Lourdes Reyes, Healthy Families Coordinator at the Latino Community Association. Reyes focuses on helping local families with immigrant backgrounds gain access to health care coverage. Utilizing a bilingual and bicultural approach, she assists clients in navigating the healthcare system, reducing barriers, enhancing health literacy, and fostering healthier futures for Latine families across Central Oregon.
“Reyes’ work is instrumental in bridging gaps and ensuring that vulnerable families receive the care they need,” said a county spokesperson.
The Organization Award was bestowed upon Volunteers in Medicine, a network of over 300 dentists, counselors, and doctors who provide free and low-cost health care services to uninsured and underserved community members. Since 2004, Volunteers in Medicine has delivered more than $155 million in medical treatment and services to over 15,000 patients.
According to nominators, the organization plays a critical role in addressing healthcare access disparities within Deschutes County.
The awards are nominated annually by Deschutes County Commissioners Phil Chang and Patti Adair, alongside members of the Public Health Advisory Board, to honor those who go above and beyond in promoting public health and wellness.
