City of Bend Announces Closure of Olney Avenue and Wall Street for Major Construction Project

Bend, OR – The City of Bend is advising drivers of an upcoming road closure at the intersection of Olney Avenue and Wall Street starting Monday. The closure is part of the Olney Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements Project, which also includes vital water and sewer infrastructure work.

This construction project, which is expected to last several months, will result in significant detours and delays for motorists, especially on Portland Avenue and Olney Avenue. The closure will extend from the Portland Avenue/Steidl Road intersection on the west side of the Deschutes River to the intersection of Wall Street/Olney Avenue, reaching all the way to NE First Street.

Motorists can expect the intersection to remain closed to vehicle traffic until June 2025. Further construction along Olney Avenue from First Street to Second Street will result in additional periodic road closures in the spring and summer of 2025. The entire project is slated for completion by fall 2025.

Detour routes will be posted to guide drivers around the affected areas. Recommended detour routes include NW Ninth Street, Newport Avenue, NE Third Street, Revere Avenue, and southbound US 97 (The Parkway).

The City emphasized that the Deschutes River Trail, which runs near the work zone, will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the construction process.

Business access will also be maintained during construction, with clear signage to guide drivers to alternative routes. Sections of Olney Avenue may be fully closed at times, but access to Riverside Animal Hospital, located at 25 NW Olney Avenue, will be available via Norton Avenue south of Wall Street Suites.

This significant project is part of Bend’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and promote safer pedestrian and bicycle access throughout the city.
