Bend Man with Long Criminal Record and Mental Health History Accused of Mass Stabbing at Salem Shelter

Bend, Oregon — A 42-year-old man from Bend, Tony Latrell Williams, has been arrested following a mass stabbing incident that left 12 men injured at the Union Gospel Mission homeless shelter in Salem on Sunday, June 1, 2025. Authorities say five victims remain in critical condition.

Williams reportedly arrived in Salem by bus from Portland and had stayed at the shelter the previous night. During check-in on the evening of the attack, he became agitated and suddenly pulled out an 8-inch knife from his bag, stabbing staff and guests inside the shelter. The violent episode was captured on security footage. Williams was apprehended nearby without further incident and now faces 12 counts of second-degree assault.

Officials have not yet identified a clear motive for the attack, emphasizing that the stabbing did not appear to target homeless individuals specifically. The shelter, which typically houses up to 150 men nightly, temporarily closed after the attack but plans to reopen by dinner.

Williams has a documented history of violent behavior and mental health challenges. In 2022, he was involved in a stabbing at a Bend emergency shelter, an incident that led to charges of aggravated second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and probation violation. His criminal record includes multiple previous offenses, underscoring ongoing struggles with both legal and mental health issues.

The Salem community has expressed shock and concern in the wake of the attack. Mayor Julie Hoy described the event as deeply disturbing and called for increased support and resources for vulnerable populations, including those struggling with mental illness.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the circumstances that led to the attack and explore possible preventative measures to avoid future tragedies at shelters serving vulnerable residents.
