Bend Man Arrested After Threatening Mass Shooting, Under Evaluation

BEND, Ore. — A 36-year-old Bend man was arrested Friday after allegedly telling a family member he planned to carry out a mass shooting, according to Bend Police.

Nathaniel Benjamin Wright reportedly made the threat following an argument with family members, prompting a call to police. Officers responded to Wright’s home in the 3000 block of NE Waller Drive and observed his truck parked in the driveway.

From a distance, officers saw Wright exit his home carrying an AR-15-style rifle and a duffle bag while wearing a ballistic vest. Wright removed the vest, placed it in his truck, and attempted to leave the scene. Police stopped the vehicle before it could exit and ordered Wright out at gunpoint. He complied without incident and was taken into custody.

Wright was transported to St. Charles Medical Center, where he remains under evaluation. He was arrested on suspicion of Disorderly Conduct II and Unlawful Use or Carry of a Weapon. The Deschutes County District Attorney’s office indicated that additional charges could be filed after reviewing the police referral.

Officers conducted a search of Wright’s home and truck and obtained an Extreme Risk Protection Order—a court order that temporarily restricts access to firearms for individuals deemed to pose a danger to themselves or others.

Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller emphasized the importance of such preventive measures in averting potential tragedies.
