Bend Man Arrested After Hit-and-Run Incident Leaves Two Pedestrians Injured

BEND, Ore. – A 35-year-old Bend man was arraigned Monday on several charges following a hit-and-run incident on Friday evening that left two pedestrians injured, one critically. Stuart Daniel Heater is facing eight charges, including DUII (driving under the influence of intoxicants), assault, and reckless driving, after a collision on SW Century Drive near Cascade West Grub & Alehouse.

Bend Police responded to the scene just after 8 p.m. on Friday after receiving reports of two pedestrians being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. The two victims, ages 37 and 35, were both transported to St. Charles Bend by Bend Fire & Rescue medics. One of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries, while the other’s injuries were less severe.

According to police, Heater approached officers at the scene and admitted to being the driver involved in the crash. He informed authorities that his vehicle was parked nearby on NW Davenport Avenue, where police later located it.

Heater was arrested and charged with DUII, assault, reckless driving, and other related offenses. He is currently being held at Deschutes County Jail pending further legal action.

The identities of the victims have not been released, and their current conditions remain unclear. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

This incident has raised concerns about pedestrian safety in the area, particularly on busy streets like SW Century Drive. Local residents have called for increased efforts to ensure safer crossings and deter reckless driving.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
