BLM Implements Campfire Restrictions in La Pine Area to Combat Wildfire Risk

PRINEVILLE, Ore. — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced a seasonal campfire ban in the La Pine area of Central Oregon, aimed at reducing the risk of wildfires that have plagued the region in recent years. The prohibition, which will be in effect from May 1 to October 31, prohibits campfires, charcoal fires, and any open flames on BLM-managed lands.

The decision comes as a direct response to the increasing number of human-caused wildfires in the area, many of which have threatened lives, property, and critical infrastructure. Recent wildfires in the La Pine region have been particularly devastating, with one fire damaging restoration efforts from a previous wildfire. Escaped campfires have been identified as a significant contributor to these blazes.

Under the new restrictions, only certain fire-related activities will be allowed. Properly manufactured portable propane campfires, metal camp stoves used for cooking, and shielded lanterns fueled by bottled propane or liquid fuel are exempt from the ban. However, all such devices must meet UL/CSA safety standards to ensure they are safe for use in fire-prone areas.

The fire restrictions will apply to all BLM-administered lands within the boundaries of South Century Drive to the north, the Fremont-Winema National Forest to the south, and the Deschutes National Forest to the east and west. These areas have been particularly susceptible to wildfires, with conditions exacerbated by the region’s dry climate and increasing temperatures.

Lisa Clark, Deschutes Field Manager for the BLM, emphasized the importance of public safety in implementing these restrictions. “Public use restrictions are one tool that we use to address repeated human-caused wildfires, particularly when we can identify one specific cause like escaped campfires,” Clark said.

The BLM is urging all visitors to the area to adhere to these fire restrictions in order to protect the landscape and prevent further destruction. Campers and outdoor enthusiasts are advised to check local fire regulations before visiting and to use alternative methods for cooking or lighting that do not involve open flames.

For additional information or questions regarding the fire restrictions, the public is encouraged to contact the BLM Central Oregon Field Office or visit the BLM website at https://www.blm.gov/programs/public-safety-and-fire/fire-and-aviation/regional-info/oregon-washington/fire-restrictions.

By enforcing these measures, the BLM hopes to mitigate the dangers of wildfires in La Pine and preserve the area’s natural beauty for generations to come.
