Traffic Disruptions in Bend Due to Olney Avenue and Wall Street Intersection Closure

BEND, Ore. — The City of Bend is acknowledging the significant traffic disruptions caused by the closure of the Olney Avenue and Wall Street intersection, coinciding with the first substantial winter storm of the season. This closure has led to increased congestion throughout the city, prompting officials to take action in an attempt to mitigate delays.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the City recognized the challenges the closure has presented for commuters. The City has partnered with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to make temporary adjustments to traffic signals along Greenwood Avenue, specifically designed to ease east-west traffic flow. The City assured residents that it will continue to monitor the situation and will make further adjustments as necessary over the coming weeks.

To assist residents in navigating the detours, the City has released a detailed map highlighting alternate routes that can help avoid the impacted area. Some of the suggested east-west routes include Mt. Washington Drive and Butler Market Road on the northern end of town, Newport Avenue and Greenwood Avenue through downtown, Franklin Avenue through downtown, and Reed Market Road on the southern end.

The ongoing Olney Avenue Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement project is a large-scale effort aimed at addressing both water and sewer infrastructure needs in the area. City officials noted that upgrading these systems is crucial to meeting the demands of a growing community. Additionally, the improvements are intended to enhance safety for all road users, whether driving, walking, biking, or rolling.

City planners strategically chose to undertake this project during the winter and spring months to avoid disruptions during the busier summer season. They emphasized the importance of completing the work before the summer months, particularly before fire season and increased traffic volumes. The water line upgrades are also being completed ahead of the peak water demand season, which begins in April.

While the intersection closure has created challenges for Bend residents, the City is committed to addressing the traffic congestion and ensuring that the work is completed efficiently to support the long-term infrastructure needs of the community.
