Bend Police Department Releases Results of Biannual Community Survey

Bend, OR – The City of Bend Police Department has announced the results of its biannual community survey, which was conducted between October and November 2024. The survey, a collaboration with Portland State University, was sent to 20,000 households throughout the city, offering residents an opportunity to share their thoughts on public safety, trust in law enforcement, and the overall experience with the department.

Approximately 10 percent of households responded to the survey, providing valuable insights into the community’s perception of the Bend Police Department. The survey was available in both English and Spanish to ensure broad participation.

Key Findings on Trust and Safety

The survey revealed that a significant majority of respondents—78 percent—trust the Bend Police, with 76 percent expressing confidence in the department. Additionally, 73 percent of respondents believe that the department makes decisions that are in the best interest of the community. These numbers align closely with past surveys, indicating consistent levels of trust over time.

When it comes to safety, nearly all respondents (96 percent) reported feeling safe in their neighborhoods during the day, while 77 percent expressed the same sense of security at night. Similar feelings of safety were noted for walking in city parks or downtown Bend during the day, although the perception of safety decreased at night.

Public Safety Concerns

While the overall sentiment towards the police was positive, the survey highlighted areas of concern within the community. A notable 22 percent of respondents indicated that they feel less safe compared to the previous year, pointing to a shift in public sentiment. The most frequently cited public safety issues were drug offenses (89 percent), followed by alcohol offenses (79 percent). Theft, Internet Crimes Against Children, fraud, and property damage were also identified as significant concerns by survey participants.

One issue that remained a consistent worry among respondents was traffic safety, particularly distracted driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII).

Community Engagement and Cooperation

The survey also provided insight into the community’s willingness to work with law enforcement. A striking 97 percent of respondents stated that they would call the Bend Police to report a crime, whether they were a victim or a bystander. Additionally, 93 percent said they would collaborate with police to address public safety concerns in their neighborhoods.

Impact on Future Police Priorities

The results of the survey will play a critical role in shaping the Bend Police Department’s policies and goals for the upcoming biennium. The data will help the department focus on the community’s top concerns, including drug and alcohol-related offenses, traffic safety, and overall crime prevention.

The Bend Police Department expressed appreciation for the community members who took the time to complete the survey, acknowledging the importance of public input in guiding the department’s future initiatives and strategies.

These findings reflect a continuing dialogue between the police and the residents of Bend, with a shared goal of improving safety and fostering trust within the community.
