Portland Police Investigate Death of Stabbing Suspect Following Welfare Check

Portland, OR — Authorities are awaiting the results of a toxicology report to determine the cause of death for 43-year-old stabbing suspect Matthew G. Greer, whose death occurred under circumstances that are now under investigation. Newly released body camera footage offers a closer look at the events leading up to Greer’s death, though viewers are warned that the video may be distressing.

The incident began on the evening of December 11, around 10 p.m., when Portland police were dispatched to a stabbing call outside a Plaid Pantry store located on North Going Street. The victim of the stabbing was transported to the hospital, where they survived the attack. Meanwhile, two blocks away from the scene, a safety support specialist noticed a man lying on the ground. Concerned for his well-being, the specialist conducted a welfare check and subsequently called for police assistance.

Within moments, four police officers arrived at the location. After assessing the situation, one officer requested non-emergency help. It wasn’t until later that the officers learned the man on the ground was, in fact, the suspect involved in the earlier stabbing.

Greer’s sudden death has prompted an ongoing investigation. The Portland Police Bureau has stated that a toxicology report is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding his passing. The release of the body camera footage aims to provide further transparency, though it may be difficult for some viewers to watch.

As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on understanding the events that led to both the stabbing and the death of the suspect.
